We are a group of keen photographers with a wide range of photographic experience - not only with cameras (which range from from simple point and shoot to complex full frame mirrorless) but also with phones (both iPhone and Android). We aim to help members of all abilities to increase their knowledge and skills in photography. If you feel that you need help to take better photographs then we can give advice on how to use your camera/phone to its maximum potential. This includes not only understanding the menus that control how the camera works but also how to improve your compositional skills to increase the impact of any scene you wish to photograph. In addition, if you are interested in manipulating your images after you have taken them (post processing), then we have a lot of experience in using both commercial and free image enhancement programs. We can show you how to enhance your photographs using a computer or even using an app on your phone to modify your images after you have taken them.
On the other hand you may be an experienced photographer and/or image post processor. If so, we would warmly welcome your input at our meetings. There is always more than one way to achieve your aim, so the more suggestions on how to do things the better. You are never too old to learn - which is why we are all U3A members!!!
We try to make our meetings as member-led as possible and we will always provide help with topics suggested by attendees. Covering members' suggestions is our primary concern at group meetings. It would be unusual if one of the members does not have some experience in an area that members need help with. If no-one can provide immediate help then we will do some research and come back with the answers later.
If we have no member requests then the first half of the meeting will usually have an informative session explaining a photographic technique. Usually these sessions are interactive so you are encouraged to bring your own camera/phone to the meeting and practice the technique as we go along. Many of the members use these techniques regularly and so can provide hands-on help, if required, during the presentation. The pace of the presentation is geared to ensure all members are completing each step and feel comfortable with the technique. In the second half of the session we show our latest images and discuss them. Its always surprising how different people see different things in a photograph and this often provides members with new ideas for photography and/or composition. As well as the monthly meetings, a small group of us try and meet on the second Monday of the month. If the weather is reasonable we will go "Out and About" both locally or, occasionally, further afield (past visits have included the grounds of Hatfield House, Ware, Granary Square by King's Cross, Hitchin, Wheathampstead, and Letchworth). If the weather is not good for a photography outing we will submit some of our newer images and then meet up via Zoom to discuss them.
New members at all skill levels (from beginners to those with photographic credentials) are very welcome!
We do not have the facility to prepare coffee but you are welcome to you bring your own refreshments.
