We began the year in September with a trip to see The 39 Steps at The Trafalgar Theatre – a comedy spoof spy thriller based on the film; then the new musical HADESTOWN in November at The Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue based on the myths of Hades and Persephone and Orpheus and Eurydice.
Then we had a hiatus as we were unable to sell our tickets for Richard II at The Bridge Theatre. However, our next two visits to musicals sold out very quickly. So, if you wish to see Just for One Day based on the Live Aid Concert at The Shaftesbury Theatre on Monday eve, 16 June or the revival of Fiddler on the Roof at the Barbican at a matinee on 3 July, it’s worth checking the waiting list for returns.
We have also just obtained much awaited tickets for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club at The Playhouse Theatre near Embankment on 21 May matinee. Tickets at £65 are quite expensive but the show is quite unique. We are planning to collect ticket money with bookings and then collect coach money nearer the time. If you are not familiar with the show, you should be aware that the show features controversial material. If you remember the Liza Minelli film version, this one is much more risqué and explicit. It recreates the decadence of a night club in 1930’s Berlin with all the hedonism and sexuality explored against the background of the impending Nazi takeover. The extraordinary juxtaposition of the humour and political satire is what gives the musical its power. And, of course the musical has many recognisable songs. This revival has won many awards, including Best Revival of a musical and set design. Audience members arrive about an hour before the show starts to participate in the immersive cabaret experience.
Contact Pam or Linda Kent-Taylor if you wish to join us. We are always available in the foyer at Wednesday meetings.
